On June 21, the methanol bunkering vessel “Haigang Zhiyuan” under SIPG Energy successfully completed the bunkering of 3,000 tons of domestically produced green methanol to the methanol dual-fuel container ship “HMM LEAF” at anchorage. This operation not only marked the successful completion of Shanghai Port’s first green methanol bunkering at anchorage, but also set a new record for the single largest green methanol bunkering volume at anchorage in China.
With this, Shanghai Port’s green methanol bunkering area has expanded from the entire Shanghai Yangshan Port area, Waigaoqiao Port area, and Changxing Island ship repair yard to anchorage, achieving full coverage of green methanol bunkering capabilities across major operational waters within Shanghai Port. This enables the provision of more flexible and customized green fuel bunkering services to global international shipping companies.
The “HMM LEAF” vessel, with a length of 282 meters and a beam of 46 meters, is one of Korean shipping giant HMM’s series of nine 9,000 TEU-class methanol dual-fuel container ships, and also the first of two sister ships built by Korea’s HJ Heavy Industries. The green methanol bunkered this time is domestically produced biomass methanol, which offers significant full lifecycle emission reduction advantages, with a carbon reduction rate reaching 149%.
Anchorage bunkering operations are characterized by open operational waters and complex dynamic vessel environments. In the early stages of operation preparation, based on compatibility matching, SIPG Energy collaborated with the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration to conduct risk assessment and demonstration of the navigation safety assurance plan for the operation. During the operation, the on-site team strictly adhered to operational restrictions, followed the methanol “ship-to-ship” bunkering procedures, and ensured the implementation of safety assurance measures, guaranteeing the entire bunkering process was safe, stable, and controllable.
From berth to anchorage waters, from the first breakthrough to scaled operations, SIPG Energy is continuously transforming each “first”, “first order”, and “highest record” into replicable, scalable, and sustainable green fuel bunkering experience. In the future, SIPG Energy will continue to enhance its green fuel bunkering service capabilities, improve Shanghai Port’s green fuel bunkering service system, and contribute more “Shanghai Solutions” to the low-carbon transformation of the global shipping industry.
