The Port of Rotterdam has launched an incentive aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in its daily operations and in the wider the maritime industry.
According to a statement, the Port of Rotterdam Authority will invite shippers, shipping companies, fuel manufacturers and suppliers to participate in the Incentive Scheme Climate-Friendly Shipping.
It is intended to promote projects and demonstrations that make use of low-carbon or zero-carbon fuels delivered in Rotterdam’s port area and the Port Authority has set aside US$ 5.68 million to fund it.

One of the Port Authority’s ambitions is to help decarbonize the logistics chains that run via Rotterdam, and through the scheme, it will contribute to the realization of climate policy targets in the Netherlands and worldwide.

Furthermore, the scheme aligns with the goals set out in the World Ports Climate Action Program, which was signed in September 2018 – which Port Technology reported on.
The Program – a Rotterdam initiative – brought together the port authorities of Hamburg, Barcelona, Los Angeles, Antwerp, Vancouver and Long Beach to work together on reaching the goals agreed at the Paris Agreement.
Speaking about the scheme, Allard Castelein, CEO, Port of Rotterdam Authority, said: “We wish to play an active part in the reduction of CO2 emissions generated by the shipping sector. Through this scheme, we are able to give various parties just that extra financial push they need to realize a concrete project in this area.”
