El until now deputy general director of the Valencia Port Authority, Rubén Marín, has been appointed this Friday as the director of the port of Vigo, replacing Leandro Melgar Casillas in the position.
This was decided by the Board of Directors of the Vigo Port Authority following the proposal of its president, Carlos Botana, who has accepted the request for termination submitted by Melgar at his own request, who was appointed to this position on September 27, 2024.
The termination occurs for “strictly personal reasons, after a period of consideration,” specified the port of Vigo. As Botana himself highlighted in a press conference, “during his tenure, Melgar has demonstrated exemplary commitment and unquestionable dedication to the strategic objectives of the Port Authority and his leadership has contributed significantly to the development and consolidation of the Vigo Port Authority.”
The head of the port of Vigo has expressed his deep gratitude for “the effort and valuable contribution” during all this time of the until-now director. Furthermore, he acknowledged “the loss represented by his dedication and professionalism demonstrated in the exercise of his responsibilities.” In this context, he highlighted his “special involvement” in the improvement of logistics and the management of the Bouzas and Guixar terminals.
“A year of work since his appointment concludes, during which a very positive advance in port traffic has been recorded,” emphasized Botana, “as demonstrated by the figures recorded in the month of August for high-value goods such as vehicles and containers.”
With his departure from the Vigo Port Authority, Leandro Melgar begins a new stage at Puertos del Estado. For his part, the person tasked with taking over the leadership, Rubén Marín, holds the qualification of a Civil, Canal and Port Engineer, “and has extensive professional experience that endorses him as an excellent candidate to take over from Melgar at the head of the general management of the olive port.”
In this sense, Marín has held senior management positions, such as deputy general director at the Valencia Port Authority, since February 2023. Previously, he was general director of the Avilés Port Authority (2013-2020) and head of Operations at the Valencia Port Authority (2020-2023).
His experience also extends to the academic field, where he has been a professor in port management master’s programs at the Valenciaport Foundation, the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and at Puertos del Estado. He has also taught classes in operations management courses and in modern port management for UNCTAD.
Likewise, he has extensive knowledge of the Port of Vigo, where he worked for a decade (2003-2013) as head of the Operations Department and head of the Conservation, and Safety and Protection Divisions.
