Russia has set a goal of entering the top ten leading countries in the world by total deadweight tonnage of its merchant fleet, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2026), a PortNews correspondent reports.

“We will continue implementing plans to expand the capacity of our roads and railways. We will develop a network of high-speed rail lines. I also refer to increasing the capacity of seaports and the Trans-Arctic Transport Corridor (TTC) as a global artery. We will develop our domestic merchant and icebreaker fleets, build tankers and other vessels of various classes. In this regard, we aim to become one of the top ten countries in the world by the total deadweight of our merchant fleet,” Vladimir Putin said.

President Putin also instructed the Russian government and the Ministry of Transport to continue working to enhance the attractiveness of the national merchant fleet flag.
