The Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gkikas characterized seafarers as the “most valuable asset of Greek shipping”, emphasizing the need for continuous care for their health, safety and rights.
He made special reference to the increasing attraction of young people to the seafaring profession, noting that in the academic year 2025-2026, 1,486 new captains and engineers were admitted to the Merchant Marine Academies, of which 225 were women. At the same time, young people aged 18-30 account for 34.5% of registered seafarers.
Mr. Gkikas pointed out that the ministry is implementing actions to inform students about the prospects of the seafaring profession, while also announcing interventions to strengthen the rights of women seafarers.
