SAAM Towage Perú celebrated the christening of the “Charrán”, a state-of-the-art tugboat that joined the company’s fleet to provide services in the Port of Callao, the country’s main port facility and one of the most important on the west coast of South America.
The vessel is 24.4 meters long and 12 meters wide, has a bollard pull capacity of 80 tons and achieves a maximum speed of 13 knots. Its engine is a Caterpillar, with 2,350 kW at 1800 rpm.
The tugboat was designed by the Canadian firm Robert Allan Ltd. and built at the Sanmar shipyard in Turkey, with high safety and technology standards.
The vessel has Fire Fighting 1 (FiFi 1) certification, allowing it to provide support in emergency situations and reinforce safety in port maneuvers.

For his part, the country manager of SAAM Towage Chile-Perú, Cristián Cifuentes, stated that “the arrival of this new tugboat allows us to reinforce our excellence service, by incorporating cutting-edge technology and the highest safety standards in critical docking and undocking operations.”
Following the company’s tradition, the name “Charrán” refers to a seabird characteristic of the Peruvian coast, known for its agility and elegance in flight, symbolizing the efficiency and skill that the company seeks in its operations.
