Safi Maritime Services expands fleet with new harbour tug
Delicay-class tug Safi-14 has 74 tonnes of bollard pull

Turkish owner Safi Maritime Services has taken delivery of Safi-14, a tractor tug with a bollard pull of 74 tonnes, from Sanmar Shipyards

This tugboat was built to Robert Allan Ltd’s TRAktor-Z 2500SX design, specially adapted for Sanmar, as Delicay XII.

Sanmar completed this 335-gt tug and renamed it Safi-14 before handing it over to the new owner. It will carry out towing duties and handle ships in Derince harbour, and can also be used in emergencies with its fire-fighting system.

Safi-14 is powered by two high-speed, electronically controlled Cat 3516C HD D diesel engines which each achieve 2,100 kW of power at 1,600 rpm.

“Safi-14 is a fine example of our new generation of modern tugboats that can be designed and built to match the specific needs of individual operators,” said Sanmar vice president Ali Gurun.

Safi-14 has an overall length of 25 m, a moulded beam of 12 m, least moulded depth of approximately 5 m and draught of almost 7 m. It can hold 83,900 litres of fuel oil and 12,300 litres of fresh water.

On board power is provided by two Cat C4.4 diesel generators with operating frequencies of 50 Hz which produce 99 kW of electrical power with output voltages of 400 V.

Safi-14’s fire-fighting system is FiFi1 class with its one main pump driven through a clutched flexible coupling aft of one of the main engines. This pump can deliver around 2,700 m3/hr of water through the onboard monitors.

According to AIS data, Safi-14 is operating in Safi International Port in Derince, near Izmit, in the Kocaeli Province of Turkey.

This tug is the fifth built and delivered by Sanmar Shipyards to Safi Maritime Services. It follows the azimuth stern drive tugboats Bedia Safi and Celal Safi, each with 60 tonnes of bollard pull, delivered in 2016.

In 2012, Sanmar delivered twin-screw tugboat Sanmar XXXI, and in 2011 it handed over Sanmar XXX to Safi Maritime Services. Both had a bollard pull of 30 tonnes.
