Intelligent shipping: AI, automation, telecoms, navigation – Sala Scirocco
The maritime sector is affected by the introduction of advanced technologies that have had and will have a revolutionary impact comparable to that of radar and satellite navigation. Precisely the doubts about the medium-term reliability of the latter systems, especially in areas of the most intense traffic which often coincide with war zones or areas of instability, are giving rise to innovations such as the return of land-based aids, but also very sophisticated inertial systems and the secondary use of low-altitude satellite constellations. Automation is turning into robotics and, with the advent of AI and digital twins, the number of seafarers needed to operate a merchant ship could be further reduced. With the caveat that a component, even a human one, of self-defense will likely become increasingly widespread, as will dedicated high-persistence platforms for sea surveillance.

The role of ports in the local, national, and transnational economic system, recognized by legislative measures such as the establishment of SEZs and LSZs, is crucial for the productive development of the affected areas. Living off “pass-through” logistics, such as that linked to transshipment and to a certain extent also to “gateways,” is increasingly a laborious prospect open to the winds of the market and international competition. Only by building a symbiosis with the industrial reality in the short and medium term can ports find their security in the future. This requires administrative interventions and innovations, but also technological and entrepreneurial ones.
