Seaspan Shipyards has signed a contract with Newfoundland-based Genoa Design International to provide technical design services for the Canadian Coast Guard’s new 158-metre heavy polar icebreaker, the first built in Canada in more than 60 years. Genoa will expand its workforce to over 100 designers and support the project through construction at Vancouver Shipyards. The Polar Class 2 vessel will be capable of year-round operations in the high Arctic, supporting sovereignty, climate research, Indigenous communities, and emergency response, with capacity for up to 100 personnel.
