GENOA – The appraisals by engineers for the assessment of damages in relation to compensation and indemnities for citizens affected by the construction works of the Fincantieri super naval basin in Genoa Sestri Ponente will shortly begin. The compensation procedures concern the damages caused, in recent months, by the vibrations from the installation of the 269 piles in the seabed for the construction of the basin.
This was the topic addressed in the meeting between the Commissarial Structure for the Reconstruction of Genoa, the Western Ligurian Sea Port System Authority, and the Ligurian and Genoese Associations representing the citizens (Assoutenti, Adoc, Federconsumatori, Confedilizia) and the Via Sestri and surroundings committee.
“In the coming days,” stated the Sub-Commissioner for the Reconstruction of Genoa, Carlo De Simone, “we will sign a letter of intent to start the appraisal activities by the Engineers who have already been appointed by the Insurance Companies to assess the property damages. Concurrently, the working group will define the scope of those entitled to compensation for the inconveniences suffered during the works, topics that will be included in the compensation protocol that the parties will sign, open to all citizens who wish to join.
The expansion of the Sestri Ponente shipyards is a necessity for the future of the Blue economy of Genoa, Liguria, and the entire country; at the same time, we must protect the quality of life of the citizens and commit to causing them the least possible inconvenience.”
The work on the new Fincantieri super basin in Sestri Ponente will be the largest dry dock in the Mediterranean and will host the latest generation cruise ships; futuristic vessels over 350 meters in length with a tonnage of up to 150 thousand tons will be built here.

“Today’s meeting marks a significant step towards a constructive and concrete dialogue with the citizens and their representatives,” declares Matteo Paroli, president of the AdSP of the Western Ligurian Sea. “The Port System Authority confirms its willingness to collaborate with the Associations to identify balanced solutions, which take into account the needs of protecting the territory and the well-being of its inhabitants. We are convinced that the path taken can translate into concrete results, based on collaboration and mutual trust, in the interest of the community and the territory. Our commitment is to reconcile the growth and competitiveness of the port with the utmost respect for the quality of life of the citizens, through continuous and responsible dialogue. The expansion of the Sestri Ponente shipyards is a strategic transformation project that, despite initial difficulties, will bring lasting benefits to the city’s development with positive impacts on employment and the strengthening of the port of Genoa as a national center of excellence.”
“We are in the final stretch of an important agreement which, in recognizing the rights of citizens to indemnity and compensation in case of property damage and personal inconvenience, with the letter of intent and the compensation protocol, completes a path for solving problems through the strength of dialogue and discussion.”
– According to representatives from the Associations Assocoutenti, Adoc, Federconsumatori, Confedilizia and the Via Sestri and Surroundings committee – The Sestri experience should serve the entire system of major public works as a demonstration of the ability to balance strategic objectives and the needs of citizens.
For Vincenzo Nasini, president of Ape Confedilizia Genova, and Paolo Prato, president of the Federazione Ligure, the judgment is positive: “We very positively welcome the commitment of the Port Authority and the Commissarial Structure to set up discussion tables to reach the signing of a protocol that provides for compensation and reimbursements for the citizens of Sestri. We hope the work concludes quickly and that fair compensation is reached”.
