In recent years, the volume of vehicle /roll-off at Shanghai Port has been climbing year after year, making it the world’s largest vehicle ro-ro port last year. Now, the world’s largest vehicle ro-ro port continues to expand and increase production. At 4:30 on November 8, the Malaysian-flagged vessel “Malay Warrior” berthed at the Phase II automotive ro-ro terminal in the Lingang New Area’s South Port. This first-time berthing of a foreign trade ro-ro ship marks the terminal’s entry into full operational production.
As an important component of Shanghai Port’s vehicle ro-ro operations, South Port has seen its foreign trade vehicle ro-ro volume grow steadily at an average annual rate of 33.5% since 2021. It is reported that the “Malay Warrior,” which sailed from Kuching Port in Malaysia, plans to handle the ro-ro operations for over 1,790 vehicles, including models from BYD, Zeekr, Chery, Tesla, as well as Caterpillar engineering vehicles. Nearly 90% of these are new energy vehicles.
According to statistics, the number of foreign trade ro-ro ships inspected by the Yangshan Border Inspection Station in the first ten months of this year has already exceeded the total for the entire previous year. As of yesterday, the number of berthed foreign trade ro-ro ships has exceeded 610, a 42.8% increase compared to last year. After full operational production begins, the number of foreign trade berths at South Port Phase II will increase from the original 4 to 7, effectively alleviating the strain on berth resources for foreign trade ro-ro ships.
The Yangshan Border Inspection Station has further advanced its inspection services window to facilitate various procedures. The border inspection authorities have also established a collaborative model with the ship operators and terminal operating companies, involving ship self-management, terminal assistance in management, and border inspection supervision, to improve management quality and efficiency.
