Shell secures OBN 4D seismic technology for Malaysian project

A Norwegian seismic survey vessel owner will provide an ocean bottom node programme on a Shell-operated field off the west coast of Sabah

Shearwater Geoservices has won a contract from Sabah Shell Petroleum to provide an ocean bottom node (OBN) seismic survey over an operated field off the west coast of Sabah, Malaysia.

The Bergen, Norway-headquartered owner will use a retrofitted vessel to undertake a 4D survey over two months in Q1 2026 to provide high-resolution time-lapse seismic data that can be used to support reservoir management.

SW Tasman will carry out this survey, deploying nodes and seismic source operations. After completingthis project, SW Tasman will have had more than two years of back-to-back projects following its conversion for OBN surveys in 2024.

SW Tasman was designed and built in 2010 as a 12-streamer 3D seismic survey vessel byDrydocksWorldinDubai, UAE. In 2023, Shearwater and Ulstein Design & Solutions redesigned and converted it to a dual-ROV seismic vessel, the first in the owner’s fleet.

SW Tasman was repurposed to deploy nodes in both deep and shallow water, and also provide sources for surveys and tow streamers.

OBN tasks would previously be conducted by two vessels, but with SW Tasman, can be completed by a single ship.
