Shenzhen and Hong Kong jointly issued new safety regulations for methanol fuel bunkering operations, aiming to promote the application of green fuels and facilitate the standardization of maritime regulatory standards in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The “Shenzhen-Hong Kong Safety Guidelines for Methanol Fuel Bunkering Operations,” jointly developed by the Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration and the Qianhai Authority with support from the Hong Kong Marine Department, was officially released on July 1. The guidelines specify detailed operational procedures, including pre-bunkering safety inspections, emergency response protocols, and inter-vessel communication.

According to the new regulations, both parties must confirm the bunkering plan in writing before commencing methanol bunkering operations, covering key aspects such as maximum bunkering volume and technical parameters of the bunkering system.

China is accelerating the deployment of its methanol fuel bunkering network. Recently, Dalian Port completed its first green methanol bunkering operation for a COSCO Shipping container vessel using domestically produced green methanol.
