On July 20, Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (SHGSIC), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), delivered the world’s first 80,000 DWT ocean-going aquaculture vessel, the “Zhedai Yuyang 60001,” which was converted and rebuilt by SHGSIC.
The “Zhedai Yuyang 60001” has a total length of 224.9 meters, a beam of 32.2 meters, and a draft of 18.5 meters. It features seven aquaculture compartments with a total water volume of nearly 80,000 cubic meters and a capacity for 30 people. It is classified by the China Classification Society and flies the five-star red flag.
The vessel was converted from a Panamax bulk carrier. While retaining sufficient buoyancy and structural strength, openings were made on the sides and bottom to allow aquaculture water to exchange with the sea, along with intelligent upgrades.
The modified hull approaches the structural strength of the original ocean-going transport vessel, combining the characteristics of large ocean-going ships with the natural water exchange capability of net pens. The structure is designed to withstand winds and waves up to Beaufort scale 17, with a service life of no less than 20 years. It is the world’s first officially certified seawater-connected aquaculture workboat to receive full classification certification from the China Classification Society. The vessel features mature and reliable equipment technology, cost-efficiency, strong adaptability to deep-sea environments, and multiple expandable functions.
The vessel was invested in and built by Senhei MK, organized and implemented by the CSSC Ocean-going Aquaculture Vessel Special Office, and jointly designed by the China Ship Development and Design Center, CSSC 714th Research Institute, and other units.
