New Delhi – The Shipping Corporation of India is preparing a massive new shipbuilding campaign, with the goal of acquiring 26 India-built vessels. The initiative is part of the country’s broader strategy to strengthen its national fleet and enhance shipbuilding capacity.
According to sources close to the project, the plan would have an estimated value of approximately $2.3 billion and would add around 1.18 million gross tons (gt) to SCI’s fleet, based on a staggered delivery schedule. If realized, the expansion would allow the Indian flag carrier to surpass its current fleet of approximately 55 vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, and offshore units.
The initiative is part of a larger procurement plan involving the public energy, fertilizer, and steel sectors, with over 200 new vessels expected to be ordered by state-owned companies.
