The 2025 fiscal year is shaping up to be particularly profitable for the Panama Canal. Specifically, the Panama Canal Authority reported that its profits increased by 14.4% on an annual basis, to $5.7 billion. Additionally, the Authority reported that transits through the canal recorded an annual increase of 19.3%. The total number of transits for the last twelve months up to last September stands at 13,404.
A significant portion of these profits comes largely from transits of LPG carriers, as well as container ships. Also, there were several transits of bulk carriers. Nevertheless, the subdued state prevailing in the freight market for LNG carriers acted as a constraint on the number of transits of this specific category of vessels through the canal.
It is worth noting that the financial results of this fiscal year send an optimistic message to the canal’s investors. This fact is particularly important, because for 2026, investment programs have been scheduled with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of the Panama Canal.
