SodaFlexx nabs second scrubber order from Bontrup
Bontrup Amsterdam will be refitted with a new scrubber

Dutch holding group Bontrup and buildings material company Aggregate Industries have contracted Sodaflexx, a UK-based scrubber manufacturer, for an installation aboard bulker carrier Bontrup Amsterdam

Sodaflexx manufactures a dry powder exhaust gas cleaning system which allows owners to burn high sulphur fuel oil and treats the exhaust gas with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). The dry exhaust gas cleaning system will be installed aboard 65,402-dwt Bontrup Amsterdam.

The scrubber injects dry sodium bicarbonate into a vessel’s exhaust gas stream, and in the heat and turbulence of the exhaust, a reaction occurs to neutralise sulphur compounds and capture black carbon and other organic compounds.

According to Sodaflexx chief executive Barry Bednar, “The byproduct of this reaction is a benign salt Na2SO4 (sodium sulphate). Sodium sulphate is non-hazardous and pH neutral and is either safely emitted to the atmosphere or collected by our bespoke capture and treatment systems for disposal or repurposing onshore.”

Sodaflexx had previously installed the scrubber on another Bontrup bulker, 96,772-dwt Yeoman Bridge, in 2021.

“We are pleased to expand our co-operation and enhance our environmental strategy with one of the most promising solutions on the market” said Bontrup logistics general manager, Sipke de Vries.

Detailed survey work has been completed, and installation on Bontrup Amsterdam is scheduled for early September 2022 in Poland.
