The immediate establishment of a special commission has been urged

According to Christian Solinas, national secretary of the Sardinian Action Party and former president of the Sardinia Region from 2019 to 2024, the immediate establishment of a special commission on Sardinian port infrastructure is necessary. «Ports—he emphasized—are the femoral artery of Sardinia. Without ports, the island would be condemned to marginality, to disconnection from the major transport and logistics networks that characterize modernity, and ultimately to the elimination of any development prospects. But while other national maritime hubs are at the center of political and strategic debate, even internationally—at least in terms of appointing new presidents who will govern fundamental choices for their growth in the next four-year period—Solinas denounced—on Sardinian port infrastructure, overseen by a single Port System Authority, a blanket of silence has fallen, broken only by recent and insistent rumors of alleged scandals.»

While Massimo Deiana, a lawyer, full professor of Navigation Law, and former regional Transport Councilor, has reached the end of his second four-year term as president of the Port System Authority of the Sardinian Sea, which began on July 18, 2021, Solinas calls for the Sardinian port authority to be placed under commissionership and for the selection, as soon as possible, of a president with unquestionable professional qualifications, capable of initiating a process to rewrite the operational and infrastructural planning of Sardinian port infrastructure.

For Solinas, «too many mistakes have been made: Porto Torres exists in a ghostly state of abandonment, with terrifying degradation of its port structures and infrastructure. The Canal Port of Cagliari has been downgraded from its original function and purpose, despite enormous public resources being spent, stifling its aspiration to become—with its free trade zone—the logistical hub for major intercontinental traffic between Suez and Gibraltar. The historic port—continued the national secretary of the Sardinian Action Party—has been subjected to a policy more “aesthetic” than strategic: of course, it is pleasant to see recreational boating at the docks and a partially revitalized waterfront promenade, but the vital function of Port System Authorities is not to build paddle courts, small restaurants, and kiosks to be managed by third parties, but to ensure the port thrives through commercial exchanges, logistics, and maritime activities capable of generating wealth and value for the entire region.»

«The market—Solinas concluded—requires the completion of other strategic projects and targeted interventions in various sectors, including ferries, boating, raw materials, and container traffic. To this, it must be added that under the current regional government, Sardinia has also disappeared from the radar regarding the establishment of a special logistics zone, which will benefit much of the Mezzogiorno, excluding our island.»
