The president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, proposed the creation of a green corridor between Madrid and northern Europe that passes through the Port of Santander.

The head of the APS indicated that the port facility is ready to lead “the launch of a complete green corridor, which connects the logistics heart of the peninsula with Europe through a continuous intermodal chain, low in emissions and fully aligned with the European objectives for sustainable mobility.”

According to Díaz, the proposal would involve “combining a Madrid-Valladolid-Palencia-Santander rail highway with the excellent short sea shipping connectivity that the main Cantabrian infrastructure has with both the United Kingdom and Ireland, and with Northern Europe, through its regular, reliable, and high-frequency connections, operated by a wide range of shipping lines.”

According to the president of the Port Authority, this model would represent “an intermodal solution capable of offering reliability, emission reduction, and efficiency, committing to the use of rail to decarbonize long land distances and to Short Sea Shipping to connect with European markets, avoiding thousands of kilometers of road travel.”

“The port’s role, as the articulator of the system and an intermodal logistics node, would ensure fluid, competitive, and attractive transit for shippers,” added Díaz.

The head of the port administration assured that the APS continuously strives to increase this share through investments both in the internal network of the maritime facility and by collaborating with Adif on the Muriedas freight terminal or on other interventions such as the 750-meter sidings at various points on the rail network.
