STAX Engineering announced plans to expand its UK operations with an investment of up to £38 million ($50 million) across UK ports. The California-based company is building on its partnership with Associated British Ports (ABP) Southampton and is in discussions with Harwich Haven Authority to meet rising demand for immediate emissions reduction solutions.
The company’s barge-based emissions capture and control technology is positioned as a complement to shore power. According to STAX, only one of seven recently assessed UK ports currently offers shore power connections, and just one in five major EU ports has the infrastructure. In Southampton, two high-voltage systems exist but only one can be used simultaneously due to grid limitations. STAX argues that full coverage requires multiple solutions and presents its system as a proven option for vessels at berth.
“The UK is emerging as a hub for the deployment of next-generation maritime technologies, and STAX’s expansion reflects the country’s growing role in setting high standards for clean shipping,” said Mike Walker, CEO of STAX Engineering. He added that results without operational disruption make wider adoption and regulatory growth “inevitable.”
Jan Petzel, CFO of STAX Engineering, stated: “Our partnership with ABP Southampton has shown us what’s possible when you work with partners that are serious about emissions reduction, and the timing feels right to deepen that commitment and further demonstrate how transatlantic collaboration can accelerate progress toward cleaner, more resilient global trade.”
The announcement coincides with US President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK from 17–19 September. STAX emphasized that its UK growth builds on its relationship with ABP Southampton, which recently hosted maritime innovators, including STAX, to advance emissions reduction.
During London International Shipping Week 2025, STAX presented its UK expansion. CEO Mike Walker spoke at the Marine Energy Transition Forum, and the company led a panel on greener maritime futures with Harwich Haven Authority, UK Major Ports Group, and other industry representatives.
STAX’s patented system connects directly to vessel exhausts without modifications, capturing emissions from auxiliary engines and reducing particulate matter by up to 99% and nitrogen oxides by 95%. The service is offered on an hourly basis, avoiding upfront capital expenditure. STAX reports it has already controlled nearly 200 tonnes of emissions in California and is cooperating with carbon capture partners to extend its impact.
In August 2025, STAX joined a four-company consortium, “PortZero,” which secured £1.1 million in government funding under the UK’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition.
STAX Engineering is a privately held US-based company specializing in emissions capture and control systems for vessels at berth. Its patented barge-mounted technology is designed to connect directly to ship exhausts without requiring structural modifications. The company operates in the United States and internationally, with projects focusing on maritime decarbonization and compliance with environmental regulations.
