Weather intelligence provider StormGeo has launched a new Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) simulator to help shipowners assess the commercial impact of CII
The new tool simulates vessel carbon intensity by presenting a complete view of the CII rating and its commercial impact, helping shipowners and operators decarbonise their operations to remain compliant with regulations.
The company said the tool was created using feedback from clients and shipowner associations. The CII Simulator assesses environmental performance and computing compliance status of vessels and provides decision support to meet commercial obligations.
StormGeo chief operating officer of shipping Kim Sørensen said, “Shipping companies are dealing with a high degree of uncertainty in commercial operations due to the upcoming implementation of the CII rating scheme.”
The provider believes that by leveraging technology to simulate carbon intensity, vessel operators can better manage their environmental performance and develop a competitive edge in the market.
Beginning in 2023, vessels above 5,000 gt will be required to show their CII rating value in line with IMO ratings which are graded on a scale of A to E, with A representing a very operationally efficient vessel.
Operators of vessels holding a D or E rating will be required to submit a plan that outlines how the vessel’s CII rating will be improved to a rating of C or higher, as part of its ship energy efficiency management plan.
And these assessments will become progressively stricter from 2027 until the end of the decade.
The CII Simulator monitors the compliance status over the course of a year and computes any deterioration to forecast the next year’s CII ratings. If the simulation identifies any deterioration, operators can trigger decision-making processes regarding vessel retrofits or major vessel conversions if operational measures are insufficient.
The data used by the tool is subject to strict validation checks setting high standards for data quality regarding verification through StormGeo’s reporting systems. The CII Simulator is available as part of StormGeo’s Environmental Performance Module in its e-Insight fleet performance management.
StormGeo reports that some clients are already on board: Norwegian pool operator Hansa Tankers plans to roll out the CII simulator to assess and improve the environmental performance of its fleet. Hansa Tankers chief operating officer Torfin Eide said the simulator will help the operator better understand the commercial impact of the CII.
“Their out-of-the-box tool makes it easy to measure the CO2 impact of both pre-fixture and post-fixture emissions results and allows us to readily calculate the final CII based on validated data per voyage and year, including projections for future compliance.”
“We acknowledge that the sooner we are able to integrate CII simulation into our daily operations and trading considerations, the better we will be positioned to manage the commercial impact of each vessel’s CII performance in our pool.”
