Svitzer adds ASD tug to Caribbean fleet
Svitzer Rivas was built for operations in Dominican Republic by Sanmar

The Maersk group subsidiary has taken delivery of azimuth stern drive (ASD) tug Svitzer Rivas, which it purchased to strengthen its operations in the Dominican Republic

Built by Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey to a Robert Allan Ltd design with 80 tonnes of bollard pull, this Ramparts 2400 XS series tug has an overall length of 24 m and is powered by two Caterpillar main engines, each developing 2,350 kW of power.

Svitzer has been present in the Dominican Republic and Caribbean islands since 2010 through a joint venture with Remolcadores Dominicanos, a leading towage provider in the Caribbean, with 26 vessels servicing five countries in more than 12 ports.

Svitzer Americas managing director Arjen van Dijk welcomed delivery of Svitzer Rivas. “With this addition to the fleet, we are investing in our ability to meet our customers’ demands now as well as in the future,” he said.

“Our operations in the Caribbean are key to Svitzer Americas. By expanding and modernising our fleet, we aim to further strengthen our position as the leading towage provider in the Caribbean,” Mr van Dijk added.

Svitzer Caribbean managing director Matthias Reinarz also welcomed the ASD tugboat to the region.

“Svitzer Rivas is a modern and powerful tug, ideally suited to service the range of vessels that call the ports in the country,” Mr Reinarz said. “In the capable hands of our skilled offshore colleagues, Svitzer Rivas will add further efficiency, reliability and safety to the service already provided to our customers in the Dominican Republic.”

In the Americas region, Svitzer employs 835 people and operates 80 vessels, delivering marine services to customers across 12 countries.
