Svitzer has completed a multi-vessel newbuilding campaign in Brazil with the latest tug from a local shipyard, Svitzer Babitonga, delivered in early May
All of the six 23-m tugboats in this Brazilian programme were built by Rio Maguari shipyard to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAmpart 2300 design with a bollard pull of 70 tonnes and a top speed of 13 knots.
These strengthen Svitzer’s fleet serving Brazil’s dynamic maritime industry supporting ships in ports and LNG terminals along the coastline.
Svitzer Babitonga was named after Babitonga Bay in Sao Francisco, where Svitzer commenced its Brazilian operations in 2015.
It has azimuth stern drive (ASD) propulsion and a Fifi-1 off-ship firefighting system and deck equipment for handling gas carriers and supporting operations at a floating storage and regasification unit.
“This tug series is purpose-built to support vital local operations, where it will play a crucial role in assisting with harbour towage along the Brazilian coast and in supporting LNG operations,” said Svitzer Americas managing director Arjen Van Dijk.
Svitzer currently operates 22 tugs, including the two vessels added to the fleet in 2024, from eight ports across Brazil – Salvador, Suape, Pecem, Santos, Vitoria, Rio Grande, Sao Francisco do Sul and Paranagua.
“Delivery of Svitzer Babitonga marks an important milestone in concluding the programme of six newbuilds as a way to support our continuous growth journey in Brazil,” said Svitzer Brazil managing director Daniel Reedtz Cohen.
“With the delivery of these tugs, Svitzer concludes a comprehensive tugboat programme aimed at supporting port infrastructure and towage in the region.”
