The construction of the unit for the study and protection of the sea destined for Ispra begins

Piombino – Today in Piombino, the keel-laying ceremony marked the start of the construction of the new oceanographic vessel Arcadia at the shipyards of Pim-Piombino Industrie Navali (50% San Giorgio del Porto and 50% Fratelli Neri), celebrated together with the auspicious coin ceremony. The vessel, destined for the Istituto superiore per la protezione e la ricerca ambientale (Ispra), built by T. Mariotti (like San Giorgio, part of the Gin group), approximately 70 meters long, will be equipped with advanced technological systems for the study and protection of the sea and represents a new generation of units dedicated to scientific research and environmental protection.

Thanks to autonomous underwater vehicles (Rov) capable of operating at depths of up to 4 thousand meters, modular laboratories and spaces designed to accommodate up to 18 researchers in addition to the crew, the ship will be able to carry out monitoring, mapping and research missions on marine and coastal ecosystems, contributing to the knowledge of the deep seabed. The ship will operate within the scope of the Pnrr Mer Missione 2 Project “Rivoluzione Verde e Transizione Ecologica”, the largest national program dedicated to safeguarding the sea and strengthening environmental research.

For now, the delivery date for Arcadia has not yet been announced. The construction that officially begins today was entrusted to T. Mariotti (whose shipyard in Genoa is full) following the public tender called by Invitalia on behalf of Ispra and represents a total investment of approximately 107 million euros. For T.Mariotti, a leader in the design and construction of ultra-luxury ships, the order underlines the expansion of activities, also into other segments, as also demonstrated by the Olterra ship project for the Italian Navy, launched a month ago in Genoa.
