Japan-based Sekikaiji Industry is to acquire a new trencher, launch and recovery system and /pipeline tracker for work in the offshore wind sector
The Japanese submarine cable installation specialist has added to its capabilities with new trenching equipment from UK-based SMD.
Due to be delivered in spring 2026, the contract includes SMD’s high-power jet trencher with a dedicated high sea state launch and recovery system and SMD Artemis, a cable and pipeline tracker.
SMD business development director Matthew Woodward said, “Sekikaiji is getting ready for offshore wind.
“The new vehicle system and Artemis cable tracker align perfectly with the demands of Japan’s emerging offshore wind market.
“Our latest generation high-power jet trencher is a powerful and versatile vehicle capable of delivering genuine 3-m product burial for maximum cable protection.”
SMD Artemis uses electromagnetic field technology to accurately locate cables during the construction phase of a windfarm. It enables cable detection during multi-pass burial, proving confidence in burial depth beyond existing technologies. It also provides positional accuracy for post-burial surveys, or when trying to locate dead or inactive cables and pipelines.
