On Friday, September 12, 2025, the inauguration of the new Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) department of the Tsakos Hellenic Academy of Merchant Marine Studies (TEENS) took place. This new school comes to complement, at the Academy, those of Merchant Marine Captains and Engineers, constituting in fact the first to operate in Greece with this Officer specialty.
During the ceremony, Captain Panagiotis N. Tsakos addressed a greeting, where he referred, among other things, to the creation of the Electro-Technical Officer Department, emphasizing that the training aligns with the technological evolution of the fleet, reinforcing the critical role of the new officers, as pioneers of a new generation of officers and executives of Greek shipping, who will keep Greece at the top of the global shipping ranking.
“The role of the electro-technical officer is no longer peripheral – it is critical for the safety, energy efficiency, operational efficiency, environmental compliance, and in general the smooth functioning of the fleet,” he added, among other things.
Greeting the ceremony, Panagiotis N. Tsakos, the younger, alongside the Captain, stated that both his father and himself with his sisters Eirini and Elisavet will continue the work, opening new paths of creation and contribution.
After the inauguration ceremony, His Eminence Metropolitan Markos of Chios, Psara, and Oinousses presided over a Sanctification service for the new 2025-26 school year and blessed the teaching and administrative staff of the Academy and the Naval Lyceum, as well as the attending cadets and students of the Academy, the TEENS Naval Lyceum, and the Kardamyla student residence “To Spiti tis Marias” (Maria’s Home).
Subsequently, awards were presented to top-performing students from the June 2025 Panhellenic Examinations of the TEENS Model Naval Lyceum and to top-performing first-year cadets of the Academy.
Attending the inauguration ceremony were, among others, Mr. Christos Karitzis, Advisor on Shipping Matters & Ship Surveyor, as Representative of the Deputy Minister of Shipping of the Republic of Cyprus, Mrs. Marina Hatzimanoli, and Mr. Panagiotis Gigis, President of the Panhellenic Union of Merchant Marine Captains, as Representative of the Panhellenic Naval Federation (P.N.O). Also in attendance were Chios MP Mr. Notis Mitarakis, the Mayor of Chios Mr. Yiannis Malafis, the Mayor of Oinousses Mr. Georgios Daniil, the Authorities of Chios, representatives of the local educational Authorities, parents and guardians of the cadets and students of the aforementioned educational units of the Foundation, and many distinguished guests.
