Participants in the Russian shadow fleet can look forward to more inspections at Skagen Roadstead. This is announced by the Ministry of Environment and Gender Equality in a press release.

Every year, several thousand ships pass through Danish waters, and a large part of them anchor at Skagen Roadstead – including many aging tankers that belong to the Russian shadow fleet. And they can now look forward to more inspections from Danish authorities.

“We must put a stop to Putin’s war machine. This also applies to the Russian shadow fleet. We are using all available tools. We know from our safety inspections at Skagen Roadstead that among these ships are old and worn-out vessels sailing around. Therefore, our authorities are now intensifying the inspection efforts so we take care of Denmark and Danish waters,” says Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov.

In the future, the Danish Maritime Authority, in collaboration with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, will carry out more environmental inspections of the ships to ensure they comply with environmental regulations regarding, among other things, waste handling, ship recycling certificates, ballast water, discharge of scrubber water, and fuel requirements. The initiatives are to ensure that the ships comply with the rules for environmental protection.

“We know that there is a certain amount of traffic consisting of older ships sailing through Danish waters, and they pose a particular risk to our marine environment. Therefore, we are now tightening the control of very basic environmental regulations so we can act more effectively and consistently against tankers and the Russian shadow fleet,” says Minister for Environment Magnus Heunicke.
