The Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub: work doesn’t stop on the path to zero-emission shipping

Must read

London, 21 October 2025 – The Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub (The Decarb Hub) has reaffirmed its commitment to enabling a safe, sustainable and human-centric maritime transition, following the adjournment of the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC ES.2).

The Decarb Hub emphasised that a global, multilateral, transparent policy with the IMO remains a key driver for the decarbonisation of the sector, and that work should continue in key areas:

•Safety readiness: Regulatory, technical and training systems must keep pace with the new operational risks introduced by zero and near-zero fuels.
•Scalability and demonstration: Proven technologies and pilots must move beyond isolated trials to coordinated, system-level deployment.
•Equity and inclusion: All stakeholders need to be meaningfully included in transition planning, ensuring the benefits of decarbonisation are distributed fairly.

The Decarb Hub will continue advancing the practical conditions to accelerate the safe, sustainable, and human-centric transition of the maritime industry, through its research and coalition building programmes.

James Forsdyke, Managing Director of the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, said: “A delay in the voting process should not become a delay in progress. The world’s shipping system must keep moving toward zero emissions, through evidence-based action, collaboration, and investment in safe and equitable solutions.”
