Greeted by the sound of sirens from other ferries in the port and by the water jets from a tugboat of the sister company Medtug, the new ro-pax ship Gnv Virgo, freshly built in China, made its first entry into the port of Genoa, thus debuting in Italy after arriving from China by circumnavigating Africa.
On the next 4th of December, the first liquefied natural gas bunkering will be celebrated on board the ship, moored at the Andrea Doria bridge at the Stazioni Marittime, which will be carried out by the Swiss company Axpo. Specifically, the refueling will be performed by the LNG bunker tanker Green Zeebrugge, which is also already in the port of Genoa, currently moored at Porto Petroli.
Apart from the refuelings already carried out on cruise ships and container carriers (in Genoa, La Spezia, and Trieste), that of the Gnv Virgo will be the first LNG bunkering ever performed in Italy on a ferry and will be possible thanks to the specific regulation published in recent months by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in collaboration with the Coast Guard and other industry associations and involved bodies.
Gnv Virgo, destined to enter service between the ports of Genoa and Palermo, has a gross tonnage of approximately 52,300 tonnes, is 218 meters long and 29.60 meters wide, and can reach a maximum speed of 25 knots. On board, it can host 1,785 passengers in over 420 cabins and has a loading capacity of 2,770 linear meters. This is the third of eight ferries (the first dual fuel LNG one) ordered by the MSC Group for GNV from the Guangzhou Shipyard International shipyard in Canton, China. The first two already delivered are Gnv Polaris and Gnv Orion.
