The port of Avilés is facing the final stretch of the development of the Strategic Plan for the 2030 – 2040 decade, a process that has counted on the experience of the consultancy Aporta Consultores, directed by Ana Ulloa, a recognized expert in the maritime port sector. It should be remembered that the Asturian facility presented last year 2022 its fifteen-year Expansion Plan to gain 20 hectares of port land.
As reported to the Board of Directors of the Avilés Port Authority, the Plan will be finalized and presented in the first quarter of next year, but it is anticipated that its specific objectives and measures will be aimed at achieving sustainable growth, territorial development and cohesion, and achieving greater organizational competitiveness.
The meeting addressed the main strategic challenges of the port of Avilés, which involve optimizing and expanding the port area, improving access and connectivity, maintaining infrastructure, diversifying traffic, commercial action, adapting to the energy transition and resilience to the climate crisis, issues related to cybersecurity, digitalization and innovation and, finally, the effective deployment of the Strategic Plan.
The Plan’s mission is to promote an efficient and innovative logistics and industrial activity, facilitating the activity of our clients, promoting the sustainable growth of Asturias through competitive infrastructure, land and services, and consolidating an ecosystem of talent and quality employment in the area.
On the other hand, it promotes the vision as an industrial, urban and innovative port, an engine of transformation and territorial development, recognized for its management based on cooperation and commitment. Regarding the values that will govern its activity, five values are proposed: excellence in management; environmental, social and economic sustainability; service to users, transparency and good governance; the involvement of people in the port’s future; and an ethical commitment.
As explained by the president of the Avilés Port Authority, Santiago Rodríguez Vega, the Strategic Plan “will be a management tool for the entire organization and will guide our decision-making with the aim of being competitive, effective for our clients, environmentally and financially sustainable, and guarantors of the development of the territory in which we operate.”
The three pillars, presented to the Board by both President Rodríguez Vega and Ana Ulloa, can be described as the backbone of the Plan to achieve a port that is an engine of transformation and territorial development, but also to consolidate the port-city link, enhance the business ecosystem and facilitate port connectivity. Finally, the document advocates for the technological and corporate transformation of the port as an entity to facilitate the activity of clients, through cooperation, based on the incorporation of advanced technology, the development of a proactive team and the guarantee of rigor and quality in management.
