The introduction of the new Port Community System (PCS) by DP World at the port of Mombasa constitutes a significant step for Kenya’s digital transformation and the enhancement of Eastern Africa’s commercial efficiency. Mombasa, a key gateway for more than twelve landlocked countries of Eastern and Central Africa, manages enormous volumes of imports and exports. The new system offers for the first time a unified digital environment, which will benefit all users, public and private, with greater data transparency and faster cargo processing.
The PCS was developed by EMEA Port Logistics and implemented in collaboration with the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and the government of Kenya. Its operation is expected to transform the way port activities are conducted to date. It will provide importers, exporters, transport companies, customs agents, and freight forwarders with a complete set of digital tools. These include cargo tracking, berth reservations, invoicing, payments, and real-time status updates. The capability for integrated digital oversight throughout the workflow cycle is predicted to reduce customs clearance time by up to 30%, improving service for more than 3,000 users on an annual basis.
The implementation of the PCS aligns with the strategic goals of Kenya’s Vision 2030, which prioritize the modernization of commercial infrastructure and the transition to a fully digital economy.
