Puertos del Estado has published the 2024 Statistical Yearbook of the State Port System with all the information on Spanish ports, which primarily compiles the analyzed data on port cargo traffic, container traffic, ship traffic, and passenger traffic from the 28 port authorities, as well as the technical characteristics of the ports. The 1962-2024 annual data dashboard has also been updated, allowing interactive access to all port traffic data and enabling comparisons.
The definitive 2024 data compiled in the Yearbook confirms that the year closed with 557.8 million tons of goods moved, representing an increase of 2.6% compared to 2023. Although the total traffic did not exceed the record set in 2019 (564.6 million tons), general cargo did surpass all previous records, driven mainly by the rebound in transit containers.
These figures confirm that maritime freight transport remains fundamental for trade in Spain. Its advantages over other modes are the lower unit cost for long distances, the ease of moving large volumes, and being one of the safest and least polluting. Approximately 76% of imports and 55% of exports in Spain are carried out by sea.
