Ports of general interest moved 41,197,256 tons in January 2026, which represents a decrease of 4.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, an effect of the storms that have affected the various maritime fronts, especially the Strait area, at the beginning of this year causing specific closures and difficulties in port operations. Spanish ports closed 2025 with more than 556.5 million tons moved, a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to 2024 (557.7 million), but record figures in general cargo and TEUs. 2026 has begun with adverse weather conditions that have added to the general economic uncertainty, affecting almost all traffic.
Last month, general cargo decreased by 8.1% compared to January 2025, with a movement of almost 20 million tons, with a 7.8% drop in conventional cargo, with 6.1 million tons, and an 8.2% drop in containerized cargo (13.8 million tons). Regarding TEUs, they decreased by 4.2% (1.3 million). Solid bulk grew by 1.4%, with a total of 6.2 million tons, thanks to a recovery in coal, but especially in cereals and fruits.
Liquid bulk recorded a decrease of 2.4% last month with 13.7 million tons moved. Ro-Ro traffic fell by 8.9% – with 5.2 million tons managed – compared to January 2025. The number of merchant ships in Spanish ports fell by 8.4%, with a total of 11,190 units, and gross tonnage decreased by 3.4%. Passenger traffic grew by 0.6% in January 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year, exceeding 2.4 million movements.
