The world’s first hundred-kilowatt-level bamboo-based offshore photovoltaic platform completed

On July 24, the completion and launching ceremony of “Jilin No. 2,” the world’s first 100-kilowatt-scale bamboo-based offshore photovoltaic platform, jointly developed by CIMC Offshore Engineering Research Institute, China Forestry Group Corporation, and Beijing Forestry University, and constructed by CIMC Raffles, was successfully held. The platform will be installed at the CIMC Jiguang Offshore Photovoltaic Empirical Testing Base in Yantai High-tech Zone, Shandong, to provide green electricity for the offshore energy island hydrogen-ammonia-methanol demonstration project. This marks a new stage of规模化 and standardized application of bamboo-based offshore engineering materials in the offshore photovoltaic field, becoming an important milestone in the development of green and low-carbon marine energy in China.

This project relies on the central government’s guiding local science and technology development fund project “Deep Sea Green Energy Equipment Demonstration Platform,” with a photovoltaic installed capacity of 100kW, and has received strong support from science and technology departments at the provincial, municipal, and district levels. The platform design continues the core technical route of the 10KW “Jilin No. 1” small-scale prototype in 2023, significantly enhancing power generation capacity and demonstration effect by further expanding the platform size and load-bearing area.

The main structure of the platform uses the third-generation “bamboo winding” pipe as the core support component, and innovatively introduces the prestressed continuous fiber-reinforced wood-bamboo-based pipeline—”Sea Bamboo Pipe”—developed by Beijing Forestry University. The third-generation “bamboo winding” pipe and “Sea Bamboo Pipe” surpass traditional wood-based composite materials in comprehensive mechanical properties, possessing advantages such as high strength, light weight, corrosion resistance, and renewability, successfully achieving the leap from laboratory samples to industrial batch manufacturing, providing solid support for the widespread promotion of bamboo-based materials in the marine engineering field.

As a new generation of green and low-carbon materials, bamboo-based offshore engineering materials can effectively reduce the impact on the marine ecological environment compared to traditional steel structures and high-density polyethylene floats, achieving “green electricity and green manufacturing.” The successful completion of “Jilin No. 2” marks a solid step forward for CIMC Raffles in the research, development, application, manufacturing, and engineering application of new green offshore materials, providing a replicable and scalable Chinese solution for the global development of offshore photovoltaics, which will help build a green marine energy system and serve the “dual carbon” goals and sustainable development goals.

In the future, CIMC Raffles, China Forestry Group Corporation, and Beijing Forestry University will deepen cooperation, continue to promote megawatt-level pilot projects, focus on advancing the standardization and engineering application of bamboo-based materials in fields such as offshore photovoltaics and offshore engineering ship pipelines, improve the product certification system, and accelerate the realization of large-scale application. At the same time, using “Jilin No. 2” as a model, they will develop larger-scale floating photovoltaic arrays to improve system power generation efficiency and economic viability. The three parties will also promote the efficient utilization and industrialization of wood-bamboo-based composite materials, build a green and low-carbon new material industry chain, actively participate in international standard setting and market expansion, and enhance China’s international competitiveness in the field of green offshore engineering equipment.
