LIVORNO – Unfortunately, the search has ended. This morning, the bodies of the two North Africans who had been missing at sea since last October 30th were found lifeless in the port of Livorno, in the area between the Darsena Toscana and the Canale Industriale. The two young men had jumped into the sea from the cargo ship Stena Shipper, flying the Danish flag, in an attempt to escape checks and probable repatriation.
Divers from the Florence fire department completed the recovery operations of the two bodies. The first body was located around 6:30 AM in the Darsena Pisa by tugboat personnel, while the second was found just after 10:30 AM near the Ponte del Magnale by personnel of the Harbor Master’s Office, inside the port of Livorno.
The recovery operations were conducted in close collaboration between the Coast Guard and the Fire Department, under the coordination of the Operations Room of the Maritime Directorate of Livorno and with the aid of the SUB unit of the Florence Fire Department. Identification activities and the necessary formalities are underway by the competent authorities.
