Thriller on the world’s largest cruise ship, when a man stabbed a woman and jumped into the sea.
Alarm sounded on the world’s largest cruise ship, when a man stabbed a woman and then jumped into the sea.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force provided additional details about the incident involving two crew members aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas cruise ship.
The report clarified the widely published media report of a crew member who “fell” into the sea and was retrieved shortly after by the cruise ship.
Initially, erroneous media reports stated that a crew member had fallen from the massive cruise ship Icon of the Seas, while the vessel was sailing off San Salvador in the Bahamas on Thursday, July 24.
According to the Bahamas police statement, shortly before 7:30 p.m. local time, a 28-year-old South African female crew member was reportedly stabbed multiple times by a 35-year-old South African male crew member. After the incident, police were informed that the man left the scene and jumped into the sea.
Passengers reported that crew members who saw the man jumping alerted the bridge to mark the location.
Being the largest cruise ship in the world, the Icon of the Seas took time to slow down and turn, although it was likely moving at relatively low speed as it approached the company’s private island, Coco Cay, for its scheduled stop on Friday.
The crew quickly launched a rescue boat and managed to locate the man.
According to the captain’s announcement, the man was retrieved unconscious, and shortly after, upon returning to the cruise ship, his death was officially confirmed.
The woman sustained multiple stab wounds to the upper part of her body. The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that she received first aid and is in stable condition. Police stated that an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause and any contributing factors to the man’s death.
Royal Caribbean International confirmed in a statement to Florida media that there was an incident involving two crew members who had a personal altercation, and that the ship’s security team responded immediately.
Crew members work and live on these ships in small cabins and tight spaces. The Icon of the Seas has approximately 2,350 crew members. When full, it can also carry around 7,600 passengers.
