Two Ships Named! Guangship International Methanol Dual-Fuel Vessel Construction Adds New Benchmark

On November 20, two 50,000-ton methanol dual-fuel /product tankers built by Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in conjunction with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd. (CSTC) for Vietnam’s Asia Pacific Shipping (ASP) were named on the same day. Among them, the first ship, the “ASP RAINBOW,” completed its signing and delivery, while the second ship, the “ASP SUNSHINE,” is scheduled for delivery in early 2026.

The naming ceremony was attended by distinguished guests Ms. Luong Thi Ha and Ms. Susan Lam; ASP Chairman Mr. Nguyen Hong Hiep; Mr. Liu Hui, General Manager of CSSC Leasing; Mr. Wu Zheng, Manager of Bureau Veritas (BV) Guangzhou Branch; Mr. Zheng Minsheng, Deputy General Manager of the Asia-Pacific Department of CSTC; Mr. Zhou Xuhui, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Director, and General Manager of GSI, and other leaders and guests. The naming ceremony was presided over by Mr. Kang Youping, Deputy General Manager of GSI.

In 2024, GSI and Vietnam’s Asia Pacific Shipping (ASP) signed a construction contract for two 50,000-ton methanol dual-fuel tankers. These two methanol dual-fuel tankers are the 15th generation MR-type product tanker products developed by CSSC GSI based on the design and construction experience accumulated in the field of methanol dual-fuel tankers. Their Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) meets the International Maritime Organization’s Phase III requirements, reducing carbon emissions by more than 17% compared to similar ship types.

Since the commencement of construction, the project team has collaborated closely with the shipowner and ship surveyors, implementing the concept of “lean management” throughout the entire production process. This fully demonstrated GSI’s high efficiency and lean management level in the construction of MR-type tankers. The team successfully overcame the challenges of parallel construction of two ships on the platform line, achieving continuous acceleration and efficiency improvement in shipbuilding.
