Ukraine’s armed forces claim to have hit a Russian missile ship of the Buyan-M type on Lake Onega – more than 1,000 kilometers north of the Ukrainian border.

According to the Ukrainian special operations unit SSO, the ship RNS Grad, which was built in 2022, was hit by drones on the starboard side near the engine room while it was en route from the Baltic Sea to the Caspian Sea. The attack was part of a larger operation that also included an attack on the oil refinery in Kirishi near Saint Petersburg, writes Maritime-Executive.

Lake Onega is located deep inside Russia and is part of the Volga-Baltic canal system, which connects the Baltic Sea with the Caspian Sea. The Buyan-M class is specifically designed to navigate through this network of inland waterways.

The attack underscores Ukraine’s growing ability to hit targets deep inside Russia using long-range drones.
