According to recent reports, global oil prices surged by over two percent due to concerns about supply disruptions following a drone strike on the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.

This strategic port, responsible for exporting 2.2 million barrels of oil daily, temporarily halted its operations after experiencing one of the most significant assaults on Russia’s oil-exporting capabilities.

The state-owned pipeline operator Transneft also ceased shipments to Novorossiysk in response to the attack. Furthermore, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which transports oil from Kazakhstan through Yuzhnaya Ozereevka Terminal, paused its loading activities for several hours until safety alerts were lifted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that long-range “Long Neptune” cruise missiles were deployed against targets within Russia during the same timeframe as the drone incident.

The aftermath saw debris from drones landing on various facilities including a grain terminal and a container storage area; however, operations resumed shortly thereafter. Damage was reported at multiple sites: an apartment complex and an oil depot were affected along with a docked vessel and some cranes.

A container ship moored nearby sustained damage but fortunately had no crew injuries as they took refuge in designated safe areas aboard their vessel.

Novorossiysk’s Shekharis Oil terminal plays a crucial role in handling around 761,000 barrels per day. The attack specifically targeted two berths at this facility-berth 1 and berth 1A-which accommodate tankers with capacities of 40,000 DWT and 140,000 DWT respectively. Reports indicate that both berths suffered significant damage during the incident.

An oil depot at this terminal caught fire but was quickly extinguished by local emergency services. Additionally, sources confirmed that a Sierra Leone-flagged tanker was among those impacted by the assault.

A coordinated response involving over 170 personnel and numerous pieces of equipment focused on managing fire control efforts while assisting local residents affected by the chaos. Three crew members sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

While some coastal structures experienced damage as well, further details are still pending as investigations continue into this alarming event affecting global energy markets.
