According to Bloomberg News, Ukraine has reportedly launched an attack on a significant hub within Russia’s crude oil export pipeline network. Despite this strike, the flow of oil to Europe appears to be continuing without interruption.
The assault targeted an oil-pumping station in Unecha, located in Russia’s Bryansk region near the Ukrainian and Belarusian borders. The General Staff of Ukraine announced via Facebook that explosions occurred at both the storage area and where essential pumping equipment is situated, resulting in considerable damage and a large fire.
Verification of these claims remains challenging as independent sources have not confirmed the details surrounding the Unecha incident. Transneft PJSC, Russia’s primary oil pipeline operator, did not respond immediately to inquiries from Bloomberg regarding this event.
This strike is part of a broader pattern of intensified drone assaults on Russian energy infrastructure observed throughout this month. Notably, prior attacks included strikes on four refineries owned by Rosneft PJSC that disrupted operations at three facilities. Additionally, Ukraine recently targeted a crucial helium production plant within Russia.
The Unecha facility plays a vital role in the Druzhba pipeline system which transports crude oil to Hungary and Slovakia while also facilitating Kazakh oil transit to Germany. Furthermore, it is integrated into the Baltic Pipeline System-2 that channels Russian crude towards Ust-Luga port—Russia’s second-largest export terminal on the Baltic Sea.
In response to these developments, Hungarian refiner Mol Nyrt assured Bloomberg that crude deliveries remain unaffected by recent events. Meanwhile, Slovak operator Transpetrol indicated there have been no requests for alterations to their approved monthly schedule for crude shipments via Druzhba.
Kazakhstan’s energy ministry confirmed that operations involving Kazakh oil through Transneft are proceeding normally without any restrictions imposed on shippers.
The governor of Bryansk region reported via Telegram about a fire ignited at fuel infrastructure due to Ukrainian rocket and drone strikes but noted that firefighting efforts were successful without elaborating further on potential damages incurred during the incident.
