Ukrainian seaports post record container volumes despite war

Must read

Ukrainian seaports handled 134,190 TEU in the first eight months of 2025, marking a 3.3 per cent rise over the same period last year and setting a new throughput record since the onset of full-scale war, reported the GMK Centre a Kiev-based research house.

According to the Association of Sea Freight Forwarders of Ukraine, the January-August figures reflect strong operational resilience amid wartime and global logistical disruptions. The total includes 66.89 thousand TEU of exports, 63.04 thousand TEU of imports and 4.26 thousand TEU of transit cargo.

Port authorities attribute the growth to improved infrastructure, cargo safety and operational efficiency. These factors have helped maintain service quality and supported the wider transport and logistics sectors.

The performance underscores the strategic role of Ukrainian ports in global supply chains and their contribution to national economic stability, despite ongoing conflict and external pressures.

In contrast, Ukrainian Railways saw a 15 per cent decline in containerised cargo volumes over the same period, moving 151.89 thousand TEU. Grain led the cargo mix with 40.02 thousand TEU, accounting for 26 per cent, followed by ferrous metals at 32.28 thousand TEU or 21 per cent.
