Uncertainty around the development of green shipping corridors

The uncertainty surrounding the future development of green shipping corridors is highlighted by an annual report from the Getting to Zero Coalition and the Global Maritime Forum.

Based on the findings of this report, a significant increase in the number of initiatives related to the development of green shipping corridors was noted. Notably, 25 new ones emerged, marking an increase of approximately 42% compared to the previous study. Therefore, these initiatives now amount to 84 at an international level.

In fact, the number of those that have progressed to the preparation stage doubled compared to last year and, for the first time since the inception of this report, four corridors have reached implementation.

Nevertheless, there is growing hesitation and uncertainty regarding the direction corridors should take in the future, which is due to delays in policy implementation or other obstacles. This has led to uneven progress in the portfolio of global green corridors, with some making significant advances and others facing delays. It is also clear that, as last year’s report also showed, a primary “brake” on the implementation of these initiatives is the high cost of transitioning the global fleet to zero-emission fuels.

Finally, in a positive development, national incentives for adopting such policies are beginning to take shape.
