The Port of Los Angeles completed the first fully electric export cargo move at Wharf 400, after moving a container from a rail facility to a ship without consuming a single drop of diesel. Every stage of the journey was performed with zero-emission equipment.
The process began at the rail terminal, where a yard truck unlocked containers stacked in a double row. A gantry crane lifted the container onto a tractor for transport across the facility to the truck interchange tracks.
From there, a gantry moved it to the delivery point, where another gantry unit loaded it aboard the ship. All the vehicles and equipment that participated were electric.
Currently, 71 battery-electric vehicles and cargo handling equipment operate at Wharf 400, representing 15% of the entire fleet. More than 50 charging stations are in service, the largest number in the San Pedro Bay port complex.
