The US government shutdown is causing delays and disruptions across the maritime sector, particularly in port operations, customs processing, and regulatory oversight. Essential services continue, but many support functions are paused or understaffed. Customs and Border Protection Officers remain on duty, but thousands of support staff are furloughed. Cargo continues to move but document and inspections are slowing which is concern for perishables and pharmaceuticals. The US Coast Guard remains active but unpaid, however non-critical functions may be delayed and staffing shortages could affect emergency response. The Office of Management and Budget has begun laying off federal workers as the government shutdown drags on. It follows a pre-shutdown memo from The Office of Management and Budget directing federal agencies to “consider” terminations for employees working in programs that are “not consistent with the President’s priorities.”
