U.S. Central Command said American forces carried out self-defence strikes on Iranian military facilities on May 7 after what it said were missile, drone and small-boat attacks on three U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz to the Gulf of Oman, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM identified the ships as USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115) and USS Mason (DDG 87), and said no U.S. assets were hit.
It said the U.S. targeted missile and drone launch sites, command-and-control locations, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.
Reports published later on May 7 pointed to Qeshm port and Bandar Abbas.
Iranian accounts carried separately on the same day referred to attacks on Qeshm Island and explosions near Bandar Abbas.
The incident came days after CENTCOM said it would support “Project Freedom” in the Strait of Hormuz, a mission it said was intended to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the waterway.
U.S. Central Command is the U.S. geographic combatant command responsible for military operations across the Middle East and surrounding waters within its area of responsibility. Its official site shows a recent sequence of Strait of Hormuz-related operational statements, including the May 3 announcement tied to “Project Freedom.”
