To avoid incidents caused by misunderstandings in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States and Iran have established a direct communication line. This was announced in a joint statement by the governments of Pakistan and Qatar, which are acting as mediators between Washington and Tehran in the ongoing negotiations in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The hotline will serve to ensure security in the strategic channel during demining operations, which will last thirty days as provided for by the Memorandum of Understanding.

Political coordination of the mediation will instead be entrusted to a specially established high-level committee.

The committee has agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement between the two nations within 60 days.
