Two 400-meter-long container ships can now dock and operate simultaneously at the PSA terminal in Genoa Pra’.

This was announced by the terminal operator, highlighting the authorization obtained from the Genoa Port Authority – Coast Guard and the work of the technical-nautical services, such as the Genoa Port Pilots Corps, the Tugboats, and the Gruppo Antichi Ormeggiatori di Genova: “The 400-meter megaships already call at the PSA Genoa Pra’ terminal on average once a week; yesterday, for the first time, the ships Cosco Shipping Taurus and Evelyn Maersk were docked simultaneously, both are 20,000 TEU capacity container ships approximately 400 meters long”.

According to Roberto Ferrari, CEO of all three PSA Italy terminals, including the PSA Genoa Pra’ terminal, Italy’s most important gateway port, “this is an epoch-making turning point, which allows us to meet the needs of an ever-evolving market and to move in the direction requested by operators. The approval of this trial constitutes an epoch-making turning point for the national port system as well, as we are talking about the largest ships currently in service in the container ship market”.

The issue has in fact been on the table for months, also the subject of controversy due to the phenomena of waiting at anchor and ground congestion related to the processing times of ships of this size by the terminals, times that the double berthing will now be able to significantly reduce.

“This authorization concerns the management of colossal ships, which represent a real leap in scale for the Ligurian port. As PSA, we have always operated 20,000 TEU ships: our know-how and our investments have gone in the direction of being able to ensure a state-of-the-art service at our Pra’ terminal. For us and for the market, the turning point is being able to guarantee efficiency and operational capability for two mega-ships at a time, preventing one from remaining idle at anchor, thus making the entire logistics chain more efficient. For this, I want to thank the Port Authority – Coast Guard, the Genoa Pilots Corps, the Mooring Men and the Tugboats and, of course, the terminal colleagues,” concluded Ferrari.
