New Dayang Shipbuilding
Wah Kwong has returned to New Dayang Shipbuilding for more ultramax bulk carrier newbuilds.
The Hong Kong-based diversified shipowner has contracted the shipbuilding arm of state-run machinery manufacturer Sumec Group for a pair of Crown 63 Plus design vessels.
No price or delivery dates were disclosed. Brokers are pricing similar newbuilds in China at about $34m each.
New Dayang, which Sumec took over in 2018, has secured multiple Crown 63 Plus orders this year, including from domestic leasing companies and various international shipowners.
The yard in Jiangsu has already built four ultramaxes for Wah Kwong, which owns and operates more than 30 ships, with over 70 other vessels under management.
In addition to shipbuilding contracts, Wah Kwong and Sumec Marine have signed a deal to collaborate on upgrading the vessels and further improve their performance by installing sails, shaft engines, and other measures to reduce the overall energy consumption by 3.5% and look to reach phase four of the energy efficiency design index (EEDI).
