by Evgenia Papamorou,
This is summer, Chios experienced one of its most difficult moments. The devastating fires left behind ashes, pain, and insecurity—especially in the long-suffering region of Amani.
And yet, hope is born from the ashes. Private initiative proves its power once again and gives real meaning to the island’s rebirth, as well as providing moral support to its inhabitants.
On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the Friends of Chios Trails, the Association of Teachers of Chios and the Chios Hiking team joined forces and hearts in a symbolic solidarity hike (pictured above – in front of the church of St. George at Vassilika off Volissos).
We walked together in the once lush valley of Malangiotis, crossing burned and untouched areas. With respect, emotion, and a sense of responsibility, we stood alongside our fellow citizens affected by the fire. During the event, money was raised to support the affected families.
Nature was tested, but it was not defeated. Neither were we.
With every step we take, we honor the past, support the present, and hope for a better tomorrow for Amani and the whole of Chios.
