Helsinki, Finland | October 10, 2025 – Nordic energy major Gasum and leading shipping company Wallenius Sol have forged a strategic partnership, with Wallenius Sol’s dual-fuel vessels officially joining Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime compliance pool as key generators of regulatory surplus.
This landmark agreement immediately scales the availability of verified compliance units in the market, as Wallenius Sol’s state-of-the-art vessels begin running on bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane). The generated compliance surplus will be strategically leveraged for the benefit of other shipowners, offering a commercially viable pathway to meet the stringent new European Union emissions mandates.
Wallenius Sol’s dual-fuel vessels, including the highly efficient Enabler-class ConRo ships, operate crucial regular scheduled services across the Gulf of Bothnia, connecting ports in Northern Finland and Sweden with major hubs in Germany, the Benelux region, and the United Kingdom. This regular, high-volume operation provides a steady, reliable source of compliance generation.
The timing of this collaboration is critical, aligning with the 2025 commencement of the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which mandates a 2% reduction in the carbon intensity of fuels used by vessels calling at EU ports.
Jacob Granqvist, Vice President, Maritime at Gasum, underscored the urgency “We are very excited that Wallenius Sol has decided to join our FuelEU Maritime pool, as this collaboration enables us to open even more regulation surplus to shipowners at this pivotal point. The window for securing compliance for 2025 is closing rapidly and the available capacity may run out before the year end. Pooling is a brilliant and easy opportunity for all maritime actors to join forces in lowering emissions from the industry together.“
By generating compliance through the use of ultra-low carbon bio-LNG, Wallenius Sol is not only meeting its own climate roadmap but is also enabling its industrial customers—including the paper and steel sectors—to achieve their upstream (Scope 3) emissions reduction targets.
Rebecca Tagaeus, Chief Sustainability Officer at Wallenius Sol, stated “We aim to be the natural partner for sustainable sea logistics in the Gulf of Bothnia and across the European continent. Together with Gasum, we are scaling the use of renewable gases at sea. Switching to bio-LNG for our Enabler-class vessels is clear proof that our Roadmap is delivering – and that we are investing in our customers’ climate goals while accelerating the green transition across the Nordics.”
The FuelEU Maritime regulation holds shipowners accountable for the greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity of the energy used onboard, applying financial penalties for non-compliance. The voluntary pooling mechanism is explicitly designed as a flexibility measure to mitigate this financial risk.
Key Benefits of Gasum’s Pooling Service:
Liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) is a fully renewable, ‘drop-in’ fuel that is chemically identical to fossil LNG, making it compatible with existing dual-fuel LNG infrastructure without modifications.
Critically, Bio-LNG provides significant, immediate environmental advantages:
This agreement marks a significant acceleration in the availability of verifiable green compliance units, providing a much-needed, scalable solution for the maritime industry’s journey toward the IMO‘s 2030 and 2050 targets.
